COVID-19 and HEDIS – Your FAQs Addressed

COVID-19 has really thrown a wrench into the lives of essentially everyone on the planet. For those working in the medical field, there have been especially big adjustments to adapt to. One of those is how the NCQA is handling HEDIS reporting. Understandably, you likely have many questions about HEDIS retrieval rates, Quality Compass for 2020, and more. Thankfully, HEDIS Nurses is here to help! Our skilled team always stays up to date on the latest in HEDIS happenings and are happy to answer your frequently asked questions regarding COVID-19 and HEDIS.

What retrieval rates are auditors verifying against to have the rate considered low?

Currently, there is no required retrieval rate that organizations must meet for their hybrid projects this year.

Why isn’t NCQA using HEDIS and CAHPS for Accreditation scoring?

Even though HEIDS/CAHPS results that are gathered in 2020 reflect the Measurement Year (MY) 2019, COVID-19 has impacted key aspects of HEDIS data collection nationally. While these reporting measures remain a required component of Accreditation scoring, there will be no overall Health Plan Rating for MY 2019 due to key data collection being compromised by COVID-19.

Has the NCQA made a decision about the Quality Compass for 2020?

The NCQA continues to assess the feasibility of using the data that is being reported for other purposes, including the Quality Compass. However, no public reporting will be done on any measures that fail to meet the standards for accuracy and completeness.

May organizations enter data manually in IDSS, and will it trigger a warning?

Organizations can enter data manually in IDSS. However, this will trigger a validation warning and you must be prepared to explain to your auditor why the warning appeared.

Does NCQA have any guidance for MY 2020 reporting and the impact COVID-19 will have on care delivery?

Currently, the NCQA is working on a plan for MY 2020 reporting due to complications created by COVID-19. These decisions will be announced once they have been reviewed and finalized.
