Do You Want an Employer that Values You?

Imagine that you work as a mechanic and you show up to work, only to have your lift taken away or your tools missing. How about a teacher that heads into the classroom to find the desks and school supplies missing, or a referee that doesn’t have the other officials on the team show up to officiate a match. What about a construction worker that isn’t promised worker’s compensation benefits if he gets hurt on the job? When you’re working, you need the tools, protections and support necessary to get the job done right and without worry.

The nurses at Tufts Medical Center feel that they don’t have those protections, tools and support necessary to provide the best care to their patients. They are lacking proper staffing numbers, work conditions and pension protections to secure their financial situations. This is why the carried out the first nurses strike in Boston in over three decades on July 12th2017. Over 1,200 nurses took part in the one-day strike after participating in over 30 bargaining sessions with the hospital that failed to reach a resolution.

The hospital was forced to hire temporary nurses to fill the void and tensions flared when the hospital locked out the striking nurses for four days beyond the initial paid strike. The hospital explained the situation by claiming that the nurse staffing agency required a promise of 5 days of work for the traveling nurses, which led to the lengthened lockout.

On Monday, July 23rd all of the nurses were welcomed back to the hospital to resume working. While both sides of the arguments have sticking points, there has still been no agreement reached. There are also no new talks between the two sides scheduled, which means that the issue can continue to drag out.

Can you imagine working for a company that doesn’t give you the support staff or adequate staffing to get your job done properly? Budgets are always tight in companies, but in the medical field corners should not be cut.
