Hack of Anthem Medical Records Makes Many Nervous, but Not HEDIS

Lots of people are concerned about medical data collection because of a recent large-scale hack of a large health insurance company. Read on to find out what happened and what HEDIS is doing to prevent hackers from accessing personal healthcare data.

What happened?

Hack of Anthem Medical Records Makes Many Nervous, but Not HEDIS Last month, Anthem Inc., America’s second-largest health insurance company, was hacked for various weeks. The hackers acquired personal information, such as names, birthdays, addresses, phone numbers, and social security numbers, from up to 80 million Americans. No clinical or credit card data was stolen, though it could’ve easily been taken, since it was listed right next to the other data that was hacked. Some criticize Anthem for not encrypting the data, though the company says additional encryption wouldn’t have stopped the attack because an administrator’s credentials were compromised and security protocols were bypassed.

Stopping Data Collection isn’t the Answer

Naturally, everyone is concerned about medical data security in the wake of this breach. Since our society depends on computer databases for medical records, it would be impossible to completely go back to paper, circumventing the possibility of data hackers accessing millions of patients’ and doctors’ health information in a short period of time. Anthem and other healthcare organizations, including HEDIS, are taking this data hack very seriously and doing everything possible to prevent successful hacks from occurring in the future.

HEDIS data is always kept safe

At HEDIS, when health information is collected, it’s never attached to a specific patient. We use healthcare data in a way that completely protects patient confidentiality at all times. The software we use is the most up-to-date on the market today, and we’re always working to ensure our medical data is kept safe and secure from unauthorized access. Just like you would do everything in your power to keep a robber from entering your home, we do everything in our power to keep medical records safe.
