Just when you think you’ve finally got an understanding of the HEIDS quality measures, the National Committee for Quality Assurance goes ahead and changes them. Just like that, it’s back to “school” to learn how those changes affect you. Recently, the National Committee for Quality Assurance released the updated HEDIS quality measures for 2019 and that means it is again time for a refresher course. The following four measures are aimed at addressing emerging health priorities and helping to evolve the care delivery process.
Hospitalization Following Discharge From a Skilled Nursing Facility
Due to a growing number of Medicare Advantage beneficiaries requiring skilled nursing services, the NCQA has come to the conclusion that there is no adequate measure to assess the outcome coordination of providers and services. This is a vulnerable population and this new measure is aimed at addressing how successful the transition is to the community from a skilled nursing facility. This quality measure looks at the percentage of skilled nursing home discharges to the community that results in hospitalization that is unplanned within 30 to 60 days.
Risk of Continued Opioid Use
Opioid use continues to be an issue and noncancer use of opioids for pain is associated with an increased risk of opioid use disorder. This measure is aimed at addressing members with ah new episode of opioid use who are dispensed opioids for a period of time that puts them into a category of risk for increased risk of continuing usage.
Prenatal Immunization Status
This tracks the percentage of deliveries on or after thirty-seven weeks when women received influenza and diptheria and Tdap vaccinations. It is used to assess how important prenatal vaccines are administered.
Adult Immunization Status
This measure is intended to assess vaccinations that are routine for all adults. It is the percentage of adults that are 19 years of age or older that are up to date on all of the recommended vaccinations. These include influenza, diptheria, tetanus, Tdap, herpes, and pneumococcal.
