What To Expect With The Future of HEDIS

The HEDIS measures were developed by the NCQA to measure the quality performance of health plans. This is accomplished by collecting and analyzing documented data during the clinical care received by individual plan members from providers. The data is aggregated and reported to reflect the care received by the plan’s members. The reports are a major component of quality rating systems that measure the quality of performance of health plans by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Every year, the HEDIS measures vary from the previous years as new measures are added and some are retired. As the HEDIS measures evolve through the years, the NCQA continue to look for ways to improve the measures and more accurately report on the quality of care provided by the health plans.

The Future of HEDIS Webinar

Recently, the NCQA held a webinar on the future of HEDIS. The digital era has paved a way for easier data collection, further accurate measurement, and more timely results. The webinar included topics on:

  • New flexible Allowable Adjustments that will allow organizations use HEDIS at different levels of the health care system and for purposes other than health plan reporting.
  • Updated Licensing and Certification requirements to ensure accurate measurements.
  • HEDIS Digital Measures specifications that allow downloading straight into users’ data systems for new ease.
  • The new reporting method with the Electronic Clinical Data Systems (ECDC) to assist in creating insight with clinical data to manage the health of individuals and groups.
  • A new Annual Timeline or schedule to allow the HEDIS community to complete specs 11 months sooner than the current timeline.

NCQA states that this is the first of additional webinars and dialog to discuss the future of the HEDIS measures.
