New Cross Cutting Topics in Latest NCQA Release of HEDIS Quality Measures

Every year the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) releases new technical specifications for the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS). It is important to stay up to date on these new measures to ensure that you are working with the right information and putting your focus on what matters most when it comes to your performance being rated.

Imagine thinking the goal of Monopoly was to have the most property, when really it’s to have the most assets or be the last player standing. The strategy you employ and choices you make throughout the game working towards one goal might be vastly different than if you knew something else was the objective. That is why it is important to know how you will be judged in regards to performance before you start working. Here are a few cross-cutting topics mentioned in the 2018 edition of the performance improvement tool:

Telehealth Modality

In response to the o the growing use of telehealth as an evidence-backed option for behavioral health diagnosis and treatment, the NCQA released the Telehealth for Behavioral Health Measures. This is based on the idea that providers and plans can leverage technologies to bring better care to their patients. The NCQA determined that telehealth is an efficient and effective way of delivering health care. It has increasingly become widely reimbursed by health plans, states and CMS.

Excluding Members in Institutional Care Settings

Taking age into consideration, the NCQA excluded Medicare members enrolled in Institutional Special Needs Plans or those in long-term institutional care environments from colorectal cancer screening, breast cancer screening, controlling high blood pressure, and osteoporosis management in women who had a fracture.
